The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is a renowned public research university located in between Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis. UIUC is recognized for its top-tier programs in Engineering, Computer Science, and Business and has many notable alumni in the tech field, including the founders of YouTube, Oracle and Netscape.
UIUC is a large school with a lively campus and lots of opportunities for students to get involved. Greek life is popular and students like to party, but there are many other on and off-campus options for students who prefer other ways to have fun or unwind. The affordable tuition for in-state students makes UIUC a popular choice for students from Illinois, but students come to Champaign from all over the world.
The university's sports teams, known as the Fighting Illini, participate in the NCAA Division I and are a part of the Big Ten Conference, competing against schools like Northwestern, University of Michigan, and Ohio State.
UIUC played a pivotal role in the creation of internet web browsing. In 1993, undergraduate student Marc Andreessen partnered with Eric Bina and others to create one of the earliest web browsers, Mosaic, right in UIUC’s National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). Mosaic was one of the first web browsers to display text and images together on the same page, leading to the popularization of the World Wide Web. Andreessen built on his experience creating Mosaic when he went on to develop Netscape, which became a popular web browser. UIUC continues to be home to many tech innovations.
Tips for visiting UIUC:
“Two restaurant recos: For delicious deep dish pizza go to Papa Del’s and for “Burritos as big as your head” go to La Bamba. If you are visiting during sports season, there is a lot of enthusiasm at football and basketball games.”
